Inter club Sparring Night
On Friday night a few of our team went to join in on a inter club sparring night which held different fights under Muay Thai, boxing, kickboxing and Karate rules. This was the first time BJJ had been introduced into this stand up style event and it was received very well with the audience really getting into it. There were 2 Matches under Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rules one of which was an Absolute fight which pitted Rob McKenzie (65kg) against Rob Clarke (115kg). The crowd were interested to see how this would unfold as in most martial arts competition they would not put two fighters together with such a difference in weight. Big Rob got a good throw to start the fight which young Rob skillfully reversed as they hit the ground with thunderous applause from the crowed. Big Rob got several more take downs as the fight came to its feet again as young Rob battled on with support from the crowd but he was the closest to finishing the fight with 2 Armbar attempts one just before the end of the match The buzzer went and Big Rob won on points.
The other BJJ match was Aaron Hughes Vs Dave Broder which was action packed with reversals by both as they were much more evenly matched in weight. A good take down by Aaron got the fight started and Dave got caught in a tight Armbar early on with someone in the crowed thinking he was going to have his arm broken, but Dave defended well and escaped. They both fought hard with some great skill demonstrated but finally Aaron set Dave up in A triangle choke for the Tap.
We are hoping to build on this to added more BJJ matches to the card but this was just a test to see how the crowd would react.
Photos to come soon.
