The Journey of Ben Hall

The Journey of Ben Hall

His journey began with rigorous training under their guidance in the original Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana, Brazil, culminating in his official representation of the Carlson Gracie Team in Australia, where he now shapes future champions. Awarded his brown belt by Carlson Gracie Snr and later his black belt by Carlson Gracie Jr in 2007, Ben’s competitive accolades span state, national and international arenas, competing with the best Jiu-Jitsu athletes in the world such as the Mundial Championships in Brazil.

His dual roles as a competitor and educator, coupled with his dual diplomas in Sports Coaching and Sports Development ensure a progressive, safe and detailed style of teaching and learning. It was this experienced background that saw Ben take up a position with the Australian College of Sports Development as a Training Consultant, allowing him to up-skill his students and Assistant Instructors to ensure the future of the Carlson Gracie Team is in safe and fully qualified hands.

Teaching, coaching while still competing, this has positioned him as a pivotal figure in spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu across continents.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is heralded as one of the most effective and complete fighting systems in the world, having evolved from its roots as a method of self-defense to become a cornerstone in the realm of martial arts. Developed from the traditional techniques of Judo and Japanese Jujutsu, BJJ focuses on ground fighting and grappling, enabling a smaller or weaker individual to defend against a larger and stronger opponent using leverage and technique.

This martial art gained global prominence through Vale Tudo matches, a no-holds-barred precursor to modern mixed martial arts (MMA), showcasing its effectiveness in a wide range of combat situations. Today, while it has evolved into a respected sport with specific rules and competitions, BJJ remains a fundamentally potent martial art for real-world self-defense scenarios, applicable in both grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts.

Beyond its combat effectiveness, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers profound personal growth benefits, making it much more than just a fighting technique. It is a path to self-mastery that teaches control, discipline, humility, and the resilience to face life’s challenges. Practitioners of BJJ often experience significant improvements in physical health, mental toughness, and emotional well-being.

The training encourages a deep introspective journey that fosters a profound respect for oneself and others, enhancing one’s strategic acumen and ability to handle stress and adversity. As a supportive community where individuals can push their limits, BJJ helps people discover their true potential, providing valuable life skills that extend well beyond the mat. This holistic approach to personal development is why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not only respected for its effectiveness in physical combat but also cherished as a transformative life practice.

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy centers on the core principles of Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts. We believe that a great martial artist should:

  • Be of Good Character (Most Important)
  • Embody the Spirit of a Martial Artist

A good martial artist should:

  • Continuously strive to improve themselves, becoming a role model for others.
  • Lead a healthy, positive lifestyle and uphold strong life principles. Carlson Gracie believed that technique is just one aspect of martial arts. A martial artist’s lifestyle encompasses their daily routines, training, diet, interactions, and their core values, like the desire to help others. Importantly, they should influence others positively through the lifestyle that Jiu-Jitsu brings.
  • Use Jiu-Jitsu as a tool to become a better martial artist.
  • Be “Thick-skinned” – able to withstand hardships, endure trials, face scrutiny, and constantly rise from failures.
  • Maintain an open mind: Modern martial artists often isolate themselves due to their style/brand/identity. Styles are just different names, and practical effectiveness is key. Martial artists should always seek effective methods to enhance their combat skills and martial arts mastery. I chose Jiu-Jitsu because if one must learn a single martial art, it should be Jiu-Jitsu. It’s comprehensive and effective in real combat. We must continually adapt and evolve our martial arts style to stay relevant, or risk losing vitality like some traditional forms. While rooting in tradition is vital, a good martial artist must develop, not limit, their martial art.
  • Value physical training and weightlifting, along with other scientific training methods. These are crucial for a competent combat martial artist and a martial artist’s lifestyle.
  • Martial arts is largely about protection: self-protection, protecting family, protecting the community, protecting self-esteem, personal integrity, and true self.

Ben’s Jiu-jitsu Philosophy

Ben's Jiu-Jitsu Philosophy

Ben’s philosophy on Jiu-Jitsu centers on the effectiveness and maximization of traditional Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Our training emphasizes:

  • Continuous Top Pressure: Maintaining dominant positions.
  • Active Pursuit of Takedowns and Submissions: Prioritizing practical, old-school Jiu-Jitsu over modern flashy techniques.
