Getting started

Is the first class really free?

Yes. For Melbourne locals, the first class is free, no card details required and no pressure to sign up on the day. Interstate and international visitors are welcome to drop in for $30.

I've never done any martial arts. Can I still come?

Absolutely. Most of our students started with zero experience. We pair beginners with experienced training partners and there's no requirement to spar on day one.

What should I bring to my first class?

A water bottle and comfortable workout gear. We'll lend you a Gi. If you have leggings or a rashguard, wear them. Most people are more comfortable in those underneath the Gi.

How early should I arrive?

15 minutes before class is ideal. It gives us time to show you around, get you sized into a Gi, and introduce you to a few people.

About the training

What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

Gi uses the traditional uniform: sleeves, lapels, collars all become tools for control and submission. No-Gi is rashguard and shorts, no grips, faster pace. We train both. Most students train both.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. BJJ gets you fit. Every class warms up gradually and you train at the intensity that suits you. We have students in their 50s and 60s training a few times a week.

Is BJJ safe?

BJJ is one of the safer combat sports because the focus is on control and submission. Beginners are guided through techniques in a structured and supportive way, with coaches helping them train and roll at a pace that suits their experience and comfort level.

How often should I train?

Twice a week shows real progress. Three to four classes a week is where it accelerates. Adult Unlimited exists so you can train as often as you like under one flat rate.

How long until I get my blue belt?

Typically 1.5–2.5 years of consistent training. Belt promotions are based on technique, attitude, and time on the mats, not just attendance.

Kids classes

How young can my child start?

Jr Bulldogs takes kids from age 4. The Jr program is built around foundational movement, games, listening skills, and basic self-defence.

Is BJJ safe for kids?

Yes. There's no striking, and sparring is age-appropriate, slow, and supervised. BJJ teaches kids how to handle physical conflict through control, not aggression.

Does training really help with bullying?

Consistently. The confidence that comes from BJJ is usually enough to deter trouble before it starts, and BJJ specifically teaches how to handle a physical situation without escalating it.

Do kids classes run during school holidays?

School terms plus selected holiday sessions. Check the current timetable for specifics.
